The Perfume

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille has a special talent. Born in 18th century France, he possesses a unique, perfect sense of smell and a pathological relationship with scents. After a difficult childhood as an orphan, he struggles to train as a perfumer. Since he has no smell of his own, he wants to create the perfect fragrance for himself and does not hesitate to commit murder to procure the necessary ingredients.

It's a tall order when you try to visually translate a scent in such a way that it can be perceived by the audience. And Tykwer succeeds right from the first ten minutes. The images of the stinkiest place on earth, the Paris fish market, bring disgust to the viewer.

All the more amazed one follows the long production process of such a wonderful perfume, in which so many girls lose their lives. The song of an angelic voice hovers over the images almost whenever the red-haired Laura (Rachel Hurd-Wood) is seen and offers the first possibilities of interpretation for the conclusion: this perfume brings love into the world, all people become gentle and the bearer is the Messiah, whom some call an angel and to whom they pay homage. In the process, he sacrifices himself - always with a bitter look of suffering: great Ben Whishaw. And Dustin Hoffman shows how to make a big role out of a small one. A cruel fairy tale that must be seen.
