Ghost Dog is a reclusive, meticulous, hip-hop-loving hitman who lives like a samurai in the modern era. On the one hand, he works as a contract killer and, on the other, he devotedly serves the man who saved his life in his childhood, the mobster Louie. Ghost Dog establishes a bond of vassalage with him in which he abides by the strict code of the samurai: he makes him his lord and is willing to carry out all his orders, just as the samurai did with respect to their bosses in ancient Japan. To do so, he interprets and applies the righteous way of the samurai, in accordance with the Hagakure.

Louie orders Ghost Dog to kill a gangster, Handsome Frank, who is sleeping with the daughter of the local mob boss, Vargo. Ghost Dog arrives and kills the gangster, seeing that the girl is also in the room; he leaves her alive. To avoid being implicated in the murder of a "made man" (an official Mafia member), Vargo and his partner Sonny Valerio decide to get rid of Ghost Dog.
