FRENZY AND STANDSTILL

The silent man has his principles: Never work with the same people twice. Never participate in the robberies. Always stay in the car. And: In the car, as the driver, he is the absolute boss. These principles only apply to his second life, his night life. By day, he (Ryan Gosling) works as a stunt driver for Hollywood productions and works in Shannon's (Bryan Cranston) car repair shop; by night, he lends his driving skills to various illegal coups. But the always cool and extremely controlled driver also has his other sides and they already show in his clothing: The white jacket he wears for long stretches of the film depicts a scorpion - like the latter, Driver can also sting mercilessly when irritated. Logically, in the course of the film this jacket becomes more and more a bearer of meaning, a reflection of the condition of its wearer - oil-smeared and blood-soaked, it shows that the hero literally no longer has a clean slate. It is an indicator of his decay, of his way down.
